I haven't been skating as much this quarter as I had been in the fall -- maybe just once or twice a week thus far.
I think the furthest I've gone this year is about 0.85 miles -- route on Gmaps -- but I'm not in great shape.
After yesterday's injury, my roomie helped to wrap up my wound, and insisted I clean it well enough.
This morning I wondered aloud, when should I start skating again?
Today, she said. Otherwise it's harder to fight the post-traumatic fear.
This afternoon, on the way to Gates, I put my skates on, slowly rode, and yes, I was afraid.
I skated a bit further today, on the way back from the center.
1.06 kilometer run!
(After watching a vid online, I started to push my back feet out, forward or backward, to turn, rather than using snowboard-style "brute force" to carve. Somewhat easier that way :)
My ankle's been acting up so I put down my skates for a week or so but picked them up again today.
I went to study 汉字 on campus for an hour just so I could try to skate back home.
On the way, I finally mustered up the courage to toe-side carve the pavement near the library, a sharp turn I needed to make to connect two separate paths I had skated before...
...and I made it! It was definitely the fastest, steepest turn I've made so far.
With that toe-side joint in place, I was able to skate almost the entire way back home -- just a couple percent shy of a whole kilometer.
With some more training -- a friend of mine joked that I should get one of these -- who knows how far I will go?
Carve carve carve. Ache ache ache.
A student blurted out, as I passed him on wheeels yesterday afternoon,
...on perpendicular skates?!
Hahaha.
