Today, I skated a bit more than a continuous mile.
Yesterday, I threw a solid, flat, reverse discus (owf).
On thursday, I saw tribbles.
I haven't been skating as much this quarter as I had been in the fall -- maybe just once or twice a week thus far.
I think the furthest I've gone this year is about 0.85 miles -- route on Gmaps -- but I'm not in great shape.
"That's sick."
Thanks, walking member of the Farm studentry :)
It was warm today -- 60 deg F -- and I had figured I was ready to try to skate down one side of the quad. At the end of that short trip, I got that little compliment.
I showed my skates to srk, who first thought they were parts of an unassembled skateboard, and he told me that Larry and Sergei used to skate the halls of Gates at night. I gave srk a little demo, but these wheels don't work so well on carpet.
Today, I practiced pushing off for a bit, and riding goofy foot. I got about one or two feet riding goofy, but it's a start.
I realized today that my skating form uses my legs primarily as a power source. Abs come in when I want to turn or carve in order to reduce speed, but I don't use much upper body strength.
I practiced adding momentum by swinging my arms, but started to wonder if that wasn't the right way either.
After some time, I started to think that a better way might be to imagine moving my core as the center of the s-curve motion rather than that space between my inner thighs. That seemed to make it quite a bit easier to speed up from a standing flat-hill stop.
Thank you, yellow copper abs.
I was inspired this morning, half-dreaming, to remember that life is how we see it.
I (freeline) skated toward Gates this afternoon, and found out that I had passed two out of three comps that had results already posted, indexed by our not-so-magic number.
Almost average in a group of PhD brighties here at TheFarm, not bad ;)
I played some (ping) pong with Google-branded paddles, went to a talk, returned a library book, and skated (part way) back home.
This time, I went more than half a kilometer down Escondido Rd -- which I've never done before (!) -- and makes up half the distance between the quad and my student home.
...which doesn't exist.
I ran back to Gates, asked TheRiddler, and found out the exam was in Hewlett 200.
Today, I went skating and got further on the path.
I also made some progress on a route back from class, but this little gap got in the way.
I fell off my skates today, taking a hill too fast.
I didn't think I was injured, but I can tell now that my neck is slightly sore.
At least I didn't cut my foot like I did yesterday. Skating with sandals is a wee bit risky :).
I'm studying a bit for comps right now, in Gates.
"...Formally, this splitting scheme is a fixed-point iteration with iteration function... whose Jacobian matrix is... Thus the iteration scheme is convergent if the spectral radius p(G) = p(M^-1 N) < 1..."
After training today, I went freelining closer to the quad.
I went about 300 meters and finally learned how to slow down instead of gaining speed downhill -- a good thing, I assure you :)
It's not so different from what you do on a snowboard when you heel-side carve...
I went freelining closer to the quad this afternoon, and set my own new distance records.
I still can't go very far on level ground, but with a bit of an incline to start, I can go for some time now.
I cruised from one side of the Oval Park to the other -- about 207 meters (680 feet) -- without stopping. Or hitting anyone along the way :)
Campus is pretty flat, but I think I might be able to find a few downhill lines along the way.
